UNIX script to determine if an input is a valid shell variable?

Pretty much, I need help figuring out how to use either the sed or grep commands to see if an input deviates from the legal shell variable constraints where the shell variable is only alphanumeric characters and underscores. I can't find a lick of information on how to accomplish this.
